Judges 7:7 (AMP)
And the Lord told Gideon, “With the three hundred men who lapped I will rescue you, and will hand over the Midianites to you. Let all the other people go, each man to his home.”
Jesus lived a spartan life, at least during His three years of ministry. He came from a home in Nazareth, but His ministry years are best characterised by Matthew 8:20, Jesus replied to him, “Foxes have holes and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of Man has nowhere to lay His head.”
His was a life of dependence on His Father, we never see that He packed a bag when He left to journey from one place to another. In the purely human realm, an example of dependence we might more easily identify with is Gideon.
Gideon was a simple farmer called by God to drive the Midianites out of Israel. When Gideon raised an army of thirty two thousand men, God first reduced it down to ten thousand, then to three hundred, and equiped them only with torches and trumpets. Marching against the innumerable Midianites with three hundred men would have seemed like madness to Gideon, and to us. But Gideon learned that victory comes from the Lord, not from human strength or resources.
As the saying goes, God plus one equals a majority. If you are facing a formidable challenge, don’t be discouraged by a lack of resources. Be encouraged by the presence and promises of God.
I really want to encourage you to be diligent with your Bible study time, because God has so much more for us than we can get from just going to church once or twice a week and hearing someone else talk about the Word. When you spend time with God, your life will change in amazing ways, because God is a Redeemer. There’s nothing that’s too hard for Him, and He can make you whole, spirit, soul and body!
