THE WATCHMAN’S LETTER

A WEEKLY LETTER FROM REVEREND GARY HOBAN

VOLUME 1 | ISSUE 10 | 20 OCTOBER 2026

KEEP WATCH WITHOUT LOSING HOPE

Discernment, Faith and the Responsibility of the Church

“Watch, stand fast in the faith, be brave, be strong. Let all that you do be done with love.” – 1 Corinthians

16:13-14 (NKJV)

A watchman must see clearly without becoming consumed by what he sees. That is one of the great

spiritual challenges of our time. Christians are surrounded by rapid cultural change, constant news,

conflict, pressure and competing claims about what is true. We are called to watch, but not to panic;

to discern, but not to become suspicious of everything; to stand, but not to become harsh. Paul joins

watchfulness, courage, strength and love in the same instruction. The Church needs all four.

WATCHFULNESS IS A BIBLICAL RESPONSIBILITY

Biblical watchfulness is not obsession with bad news. It is spiritual attentiveness. We pay attention to the

condition of our own hearts, the health of the Church, the pressures facing families, the needs of our

communities and the opportunities God is placing before us. A watchman notices what others may overlook,

but he brings what he sees before God rather than allowing it to become fuel for fear.

DISCERNMENT MUST BE GOVERNED BY SCRIPTURE

Not every urgent claim is true and not every spiritual-sounding warning is from God. Scripture gives

discernment its boundaries. We test teaching, prophecy, impressions and cultural claims rather than

accepting them because they are dramatic. The Holy Spirit does not lead the Church away from the character

of Jesus or the authority of the Word.

DO NOT LET INFORMATION BECOME FEAR

A person can consume so much information that the soul becomes permanently agitated. Watchmen need to

know when to look and when to pray. We do not honour God by remaining emotionally captive to every

headline. If information consistently produces panic, anger or hopelessness, we need to return to the

presence of God and allow Scripture to restore proportion.

STAND FAST IN THE FAITH

Paul’s instruction is not simply to watch; it is to stand. The Church must know what it believes. Cultural

pressure exposes shallow foundations quickly. We need believers who understand the Gospel, trust

Scripture, know the character of God and can explain their hope without embarrassment. Conviction is not

stubbornness. It is settled faithfulness to truth.

COURAGE DOES NOT REQUIRE HARSHNESS

Christian courage is often misunderstood as volume or confrontation. Jesus could be direct, but He was

never controlled by insecurity. Courage allows us to speak truth without needing to humiliate anyone. We can

disagree clearly, defend biblical conviction and still treat people with dignity. Paul ends the instruction by

saying that everything must be done in love.

LOVE IS NOT COMPROMISE

Love does not require us to call darkness light. Biblical love seeks the true good of another person.

Sometimes that means comfort; sometimes warning; sometimes patience; sometimes correction. Truth

without love can become cruelty, while love without truth becomes sentimentality. The Church needs the

character of Jesus, full of grace and truth.PRAY FOR THE CHURCH BEFORE CRITICISING IT

It is easy to identify weakness in churches and leaders. Watchmen must resist becoming professional critics.

If we see compromise, prayer should be our first response. Ask God to strengthen pastors, purify motives,

restore biblical preaching, heal wounded congregations and give leaders courage. Intercession turns

observation into responsibility.

KEEP HOPE AT THE CENTRE

Hope is not denial of difficulty. Christian hope is confidence that Jesus Christ remains Lord, the Gospel

remains powerful and the Holy Spirit remains active. Australia may change. Institutions may disappoint us.

Churches may face pressure. None of those things dethrone Christ. Watchfulness without hope becomes

anxiety; biblical watchfulness looks for the morning.

GUARD YOUR OWN HEART

The watchman is not exempt from the dangers he warns others about. Pride, bitterness, fear and

self-righteousness can enter quietly. Ask God regularly to search you. If we are praying for national

repentance while refusing personal repentance, our intercession has become distorted. The wall must be

watched from a clean heart.

WATCH OVER FAMILIES AND THE NEXT GENERATION

Parents and grandparents carry a vital watch. Children are being formed by voices far beyond the home. Pray

for wisdom, courage and strong relationships. Teach Scripture naturally. Listen well. Model repentance.

Create homes where questions can be asked and where faith is lived rather than merely demanded.

WATCH FOR GOSPEL OPPORTUNITIES

A watchman does not only see threats. He also sees openings. Cultural uncertainty can create spiritual

questions. Loneliness can create opportunities for Christian hospitality. Crisis can expose the limits of

self-sufficiency. Ask God to help you recognise people who are ready for conversation, prayer or an invitation.

PRAY FOR LEADERS WITHOUT PARTISAN CAPTIVITY

Scripture calls us to pray for those in authority. That prayer is larger than party loyalty. We pray for wisdom,

justice, restraint, truth and conditions in which people can live peaceably and the Gospel can advance. The

Church serves Christ first and therefore must not allow political identity to replace Kingdom identity.

STAY CONNECTED TO THE BODY

Isolation weakens discernment. We need trustworthy believers, local churches and mature leaders who can

test our conclusions and strengthen us. Watchmen who answer to no one can easily drift into speculation.

Humility welcomes accountability.

LET PRAYER PRODUCE OBEDIENCE

If God shows us a need, He may also show us a response. Prayer may lead to generosity, reconciliation,

evangelism, service, advocacy for someone vulnerable or practical support for a family. We do not merely

observe the breach. We help rebuild the wall.

KEEP WATCH – AND KEEP LOVING

The Church in Australia needs believers who are spiritually awake and emotionally steady. Watch. Stand fast.

Be brave. Be strong. And let everything be done in love. That combination will protect us from both passivity

and panic. We can face the future without fear because the One we follow is faithful.

A PRAYER FOR AUSTRALIA

Heavenly Father, teach us to watch without fear and to stand without becoming harsh. Give Your Church

discernment anchored in Scripture and hearts governed by the Holy Spirit. Search us and cleanse us from

pride, bitterness and panic. Strengthen pastors, families and believers across Australia. Give wisdom to those

in authority and open doors for the Gospel. Make us courageous, steady and full of love. Keep hope alive in

Your Church because Jesus Christ remains Lord. In His name. Amen.

WATCHMAN’S RESPONSE

Review what has been shaping your attention this week. If news, social media or speculation has been

producing more fear than prayer, change the pattern. Bring what you see before God and ask what faithful

obedience looks like.
