Romans 8:15 (NKJV)
15 For you did not receive the spirit of bondage again to fear, but you received the Spirit of adoption by whom we cry out, “Abba, Father.”
Every now and then we see encouraging headlines like ” couple adopts abandoned baby”, “Family takes in handicapped youth”, “needy child finds loving home”. Stories like these are heart warming reminders that some children who have no family can find a place to belong.
The apostle Paul uses the illustration of adoption to explain how we are drawn into the family of God. we are alone, bound in sin, until we are found by God and welcomed into His family. Because of His love and grace, we are adopted as His own children.
5 having predestined us to adoption as sons by Jesus Christ to Himself, according to the good pleasure of His will, Ephesians 1:5 (NKJV)
By Adoption
In the first century, an adopted son was chosen by his father to carry on the family name and inherit his estate. There was nothing inferior about this son. In fact, it has been suggested by Bible scholars that because of the fathers intentional choice, the adopted son might well enjoy the fathers affection more fully and reproduce the fathers character more worthily.
Our place in God’s family gives us great rights and privileges, but also gives us responsibilities. Since your Heavenly Father chose you to be part of His eternal family, live up to that calling today by asking Him to reproduce His character in your life.
I really want to encourage you to be diligent with your Bible study time, because God has so much more for us than we can get from just going to church once or twice a week and hearing someone else talk about the Word. When you spend time with God, your life will change in amazing ways, because God is a Redeemer. There’s nothing that’s too hard for Him, and He can make you whole, spirit, soul and body!
