A Just Man

A Just Man
Matthew 1:19-20 (NKJV)

Then Joseph her husband, being a just man, and not wanting to make her a public example, was minded to put her away secretly. But while he thought about these things, behold, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take to you Mary your wife, for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit.

The word just means righteous, fair, and upright. When the Scriptures describe Joseph as a just man, they show us the qualities in his life that caused God to choose him to be the earthly father of Jesus.

A Just Man

Joseph was compassionate. When he learned Mary was pregnant before their marriage ceremony. Many people including myself would have had a few questions for Mary. Joseph was entitled to divorce Mary in a public spectacle or a private ceremony. Choosing the gracious option he decided to divorce her quietly. He didn’t seek revenge but thought of what was best for Mary.

Joseph was thoughtful. While he was trying to decide how to handle his dilemma, he “thought about these things.” His stopping for thought gave God time to speak to him through an angel. Had Joseph acted rashly in hast, the plan could have all gone wrong.

When you bring compassion into you life, you will have tenderhearted relationships who can see with the eyes of Jesus. When you bring thoughtfulness, taking time to think before acting, you will have people around you who act fairly and justly, giving honour to God.

I really want to encourage you to be diligent with your Bible study time, because God has so much more for us than we can get from just going to church once or twice a week and hearing someone else talk about the Word. When you spend time with God, your life will change in amazing ways, because God is a Redeemer. There’s nothing that’s too hard for Him, and He can make you whole, spirit, soul and body!
