“Those who trust in the Lord Are like Mount Zion, Which cannot be moved, but abides forever. As the mountains surround Jerusalem, So the Lord surrounds His people From this time forth and forever.” Psalms 125:2
“Abides forever”; Jesus asks us to abide in him forever.
Jesus preached to the nations and abiding in him we are to follow his path.
He told the disciples to continue to reach out to the nations and bringing in the harvest and intercede.
“Then the eleven disciples went away into Galilee, to the mountain which Jesus had appointed for them. When they saw Him, they worshiped Him; but some doubted. And Jesus came and spoke to them, saying, “All authority has been given to Me in heaven and on earth. Go therefore and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe all things that I have commanded you; and lo, I am with you always, even to the end of the age.” Amen.”
“Abiding” related terms include meaning “continuing for a long time” or “not changing” (as in “an abiding friendship”), abidance (“continuance” or “the act or process of doing what you have been asked or ordered to do”),
The dictionary meaning of abide includes: continue, last, endure, persist mean to exist over a period of time or indefinitely, continue applies to a process going on without ending.
Some common synonyms of abide are bear, endure, stand, suffer, and tolerate.
The primary scripture for “abide in me” in the King James Version (KJV) is found in John 15:4-12, where Jesus compares abiding in him to a branch staying on a vine to bear fruit. Key verses include John 15:4, “Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me,” and John 15:5, “I am the vine, ye are the branches…”. This passage emphasizes that spiritual fruitfulness comes from a deep, continuous connection with Jesus, and that keeping his commandments allows you to remain in his love.
“He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High Shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty. I will say of the Lord, “He is my refuge and my fortress; My God, in Him I will trust.””
In the phrase “abide in me,” Jesus is asking his followers to stay constant in their relationship to him.
This flows on to the scripture with reference to an eagle. A majestic bird of creation to which we can relate our lives to. The song Eagle’s Wings includes the lyric “Abide in me I pray”
The most prominent Bible verse for renewing strength is Isaiah 40:31: “But those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint”. This verse promises that by waiting on or hoping in God, believers gain new power to overcome fatigue and challenges, rising above them like eagles.
As we start a new year, gather yourselves and renew our strength to continue the commands of Jesus including “abide in me”.
