Why Australia Needs Christian Leaders to Stand Up
By Pastor Gary Hoban
Australia stands at a defining moment in her history. Ours is a nation richly blessed by God — a land of wide horizons, opportunity, and freedom. From the earliest days, Christian faith has shaped our institutions, our laws, our education system, and our sense of justice. The Gospel helped form the moral foundations upon which this nation was built. Yet today, those foundations are being tested as never before.
We are witnessing moral confusion, increasing hostility toward biblical truth, the erosion of family values, and a steady removal of Christian influence from public life. What was once assumed to be good is now questioned. What was once celebrated as righteous is now labelled intolerant. In such an hour, silence is not neutrality — it is surrender.
Australia does not simply need more political debate or social reform. Australia needs Christian leaders to stand up.
A Crisis of Leadership
Leadership is not merely about position; it is about courage. True leadership requires conviction grounded in truth. The Scriptures remind us, “When the righteous are in authority, the people rejoice” (Proverbs 29:2). This principle is timeless. When godly men and women influence culture — in government, education, media, business, and the Church — society flourishes. When righteousness is sidelined, confusion increases.
We are seeing the fruit of a generation where many believers have withdrawn from public engagement. Fear of criticism, fear of cancellation, fear of being misunderstood — these pressures have silenced voices that should be clear and compassionate. Yet the call of Christ has never been to retreat. Jesus declared in Matthew 5:13–14 that we are the salt of the earth and the light of the world. Salt preserves. Light exposes darkness. Both require presence.
The Church cannot afford to hide her light under a basket.
Standing in Love, Not Anger
To stand up does not mean to stand in aggression. Christian leadership must be marked by humility and love. The Apostle Paul urged believers to “speak the truth in love” (Ephesians 4:15). Our tone must reflect Christ’s heart even when our message confronts cultural error.
Australia needs leaders who are unashamed of biblical truth yet filled with grace. Leaders who defend life from conception to natural death. Leaders who uphold marriage as God designed it. Leaders who protect children from ideological confusion. Leaders who champion religious freedom not merely for Christians but for all people.
This is not about power. It is about stewardship.
The Responsibility of the Church
The Church in Australia has been given much. With that blessing comes responsibility. The prophet Ezekiel described the watchman on the wall — one who sees danger approaching and sounds the alarm. If he remains silent, the blood is on his hands (Ezekiel 33). This is a sobering image. Christian leaders are watchmen for their communities.
Pastors must preach the full counsel of God, not a diluted gospel shaped by cultural preference. Business leaders must operate with integrity that reflects Christ. Educators must nurture truth with wisdom. Parents must disciple their children intentionally.
We cannot outsource spiritual responsibility to “someone else.” Revival has never come through passive observers; it has come through surrendered leaders who dare to obey God publicly.
The Battle Is Spiritual
Our struggle is not against flesh and blood (Ephesians 6:12). The tensions we see in politics, education, and culture are manifestations of deeper spiritual realities. The answer is not political rage but spiritual authority.
Australia needs leaders who pray. Leaders who fast. Leaders who intercede for cities and regions. Before we stand in parliament, we must kneel in prayer. Before we influence legislation, we must cultivate intimacy with God.
History teaches us that national transformation begins in the prayer closet. The Great South Land of the Holy Spirit — as Captain James Cook once prophetically declared — carries a spiritual destiny. But destiny is stewarded, not assumed.
Courage in the Public Square
The early Church grew in a hostile environment. Under Roman rule, believers faced ridicule and persecution. Yet they did not shrink back. Their boldness was not rooted in human confidence but in the resurrection of Christ. Acts 4 records that when threatened, the disciples prayed not for safety but for boldness.
We must ask the same.
Australia’s public square needs articulate, Spirit-filled Christians who can thoughtfully engage cultural issues. We need lawyers who defend conscience rights. We need politicians who resist compromise. We need journalists who pursue truth. We need artists who communicate beauty rooted in God’s design.
Silence creates a vacuum — and vacuums are quickly filled.
Raising the Next Generation
Perhaps the greatest urgency lies in discipling the next generation. Young Australians are navigating a world saturated with digital influence, moral relativism, and identity confusion. If Christian leaders fail to stand now, we risk leaving our children without clear direction.
Deuteronomy 6 commands parents to teach God’s Word diligently to their children — when sitting at home, walking along the road, lying down, and rising up. Leadership begins in the family. Fathers and mothers are the first pastors.
We must not assume our children will absorb faith by osmosis. They need modelling. They need courageous examples. They need to see adults who live what they profess.
A Call to Repentance and Renewal
Before calling the nation to repentance, the Church must examine herself. Have we compromised? Have we preferred comfort over courage? Have we prioritised popularity over obedience?
2 Chronicles 7:14 remains God’s promise: if His people humble themselves, pray, seek His face, and turn from wicked ways, He will hear from heaven and heal their land. The condition begins with “My people.”
Standing up begins with kneeling down.
The Cost and the Reward
There will be a cost. Jesus never hid that reality. To follow Him is to carry a cross. Some will face criticism. Some may lose positions. Some will be misrepresented. But eternity weighs heavier than public opinion.
And there is reward. When believers stand faithfully, God moves powerfully. Throughout history, spiritual awakenings have followed seasons of courageous proclamation. When leaders rise in obedience, communities shift.
Australia’s story is not finished. I believe this nation can experience renewal. But renewal requires responsibility. It requires men and women who refuse to bow to cultural pressure and instead bow to Christ alone.
The Hour Is Now
This is not a time for despair. It is a time for decision.
Christian leaders in Australia — pastors, business owners, teachers, parents, public servants — must recognise the hour. We are not here by accident. God has placed us in this generation for His purposes.
Let us stand — not in pride, but in surrender.
Let us speak — not in anger, but in love.
Let us lead — not for applause, but for eternity.
Australia does not need louder noise. She needs clearer truth. She needs leaders whose lives reflect the Lordship of Jesus Christ.
May we be found faithful.
Until next time
