Welcome to Refinery Life Australia.

The Lord’s Prayer.

Our Father in heaven, Hallowed be Your name.

Your kingdom come. Your will be done On earth as it is in heaven.

Give us this day our daily bread.

And forgive us our debts, As we forgive our debtors.

And do not lead us into temptation, But deliver us from the evil one.

For Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever. Amen.”

This week we continue our study focusing on Paul’s letter to the Corinthians.

Today we are talking about Heirs to the Kingdom.

Text

Scripture Reading

1 Corinthians 6:9-11 NKJV

9 Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites,

10 nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

11 And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

Prayer

In Jesus name we pray.

Amen.

Introduction

Just who will inherit the kingdom of God?

  1. Let’s clarify some things.

What is the meaning of “kingdom of God”?

The definition commonly given is that it is the rule or reign of God in the hearts and lives of humans.

This concept means that the rule is on earth here and now.

For practical purposes, the blessings of God are for the redeemed here on earth now.

It is righteousness, or right living.

However, the definition used in 1 Corinthians seems to have some variations, Paul seems to refer to the new Jerusalem and not the present.

He is referring to the reign of God when there will be no night, no sin, no curse, and no pain.

What is the meaning if “inherit”?

The literal meaning of the word is “to receive, to take or hold a possession or rights by inheritance.”

It is to take possession of by receiving.

To inherit God’s kingdom, someone must be made a child of God, and they will then become an heir.

2. There are some warnings.

In 1 Corinthians 6:9 Paul said, “Be not deceived”.

This is a common warning in the Bible.

Jesus said in Mark 13:5, “Take heed that no one deceives you.”

John said in 1 John 3:7, “Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous.”

And Paul said in Galatians 6:7, “Do not be deceived, God is not mocked; for whatever a man sows, that he will also reap.”

This is a warning that is justifiable.

The Corinthians were wrong in their thinking.

They needed a waring.

Their thinking had led them to loose morals and sinful habits.

People’s behaviour today is very similar.

There is a great danger if you think of sin lightly.

An example of this wrong thinking is believing that being admitted into the church by baptism is sufficient.

This warning involves the simple statement that profession of faith must be supported by action.

James wrote in James 2:17, Thus also faith by itself, if it does not have works, is dead.

People are to be recognised by their righteous living.

3. It should be made known who will inherit the kingdom.

Jesus placed prime importance on inheriting the kingdom.

He said, “Seek first the kingdom.”

He also said in Matthew 13:44, “Again, the kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and hid; and for joy over it he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field.

Paul mentions three things in 1 Corinthians 6:11 that indicate how we inherit the kingdom.

First, he says “You are washed.”

This literally means, “Get yourself washed,” or “Let yourself be washed.”

The sinner is washed in the blood.

This cleansing is symbolised in baptism.

Second, he says “You are sanctified.”

Sanctification means consecrated to holiness.

It means separated from sin unto God and thus made holy.

It is the removal of sin and guilt.

Thirdly, Paul says, “You are justified.”

This is a judicial term.

The sinner is declared to be in the right relationship with God through the work of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Conclusion.

Our Scripture lists a number of things that keep us from inheriting the kingdom, 1 Corinthians 6:9-10, Do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived. Neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor homosexuals, nor sodomites, nor thieves, nor covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor extortioners will inherit the kingdom of God.

Then we find out how someone can be free of all these and inherit the kingdom in 1 Corinthians 6:11, And such were some of you. But you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus and by the Spirit of our God.

Go to God and make sure you are washed, sanctified, and justified.

Until next time
