Intercessory Prayer For The family And Nation Is Urgent.

I am persuaded that we are living in the last of the last days. Western civilisation, which was built on the radical idea that every person has value because each of us is created by and loved by God, is in rapid, possible terminal decline. Much of the church is apostate. The recently installed Archbishop of Canterbury holds unbiblical views on topics such as ‘pro-choice’, the blessing of same-sex unions and payment of reparations to descendants of slaves. Far too many Christian leaders have been exposed for sexual and other sins.

The United States enters 2026, its 250^th year as a republic in the grip of a ‘cold’ civil war. Many elected offices, such as attorneys general, sherifs and school boards are intensely party-political, and the justice system is blatantly politicised and weaponised. There is little evidence of Christian virtue in public life.

The founders were aware of the importance of Christian virtue as the undergirding of the republic. Many, of course, were strong Christians. John Adams, for instance, said, ‘Our Constitution was made only for a moral and religious people. It is wholly inadequate to the government of any other.’ Noah Webster asserted, ‘The Christian religion… is the basis, or rather the source, of all genuine freedom in government.’ When Benjamin Franklin was asked at the conclusion of the Constitutional Convention (1787) whether the outcome was a republic or monarchy, he famously replied, ‘A republic, if you can keep it.’ Although many say Franklin was a deist, he advocated for the necessity of divine intervention and moral backing for the republic, noting that without it, the project would fail.

Abraham Lincoln believed that America would never be conquered by a foreign power but might decay from within. He believed that cultural, moral, and civic decay—rather than external attack—was the primary threat to a free society. It certainly seems that his fears have been realised.

Interestingly, one of the scriptures that inspired the American republic is Exodus 18 where Jethro is recorded as advising Moses on how to structure civil government. To my mind, this explains why so many offices in the United States are elected. There are now so few virtuous people holding elected office that the republican experiment is in imminent danger of failing.

Why might this be relevant to PIFA? Well, it seems to me that Australia is not far behind the United States. The same can be said for western nations generally.

If I had to pinpoint an event that marked the turning point, it would be the legalisation of same-sex marriage which goes against the wisdom and clear teaching of the Bible. In every nation that has legalised same-sex marriage, Marxist ideologies have been unleashed and are destroying God’s two most important creations – the family and the nation-state.

In my opinion, there has never been a time in human history when intercessory prayer for the family and nation was more urgent. The only thing that can save us from utter chaos is a massive awakening of the kind recorded in the United States in the 1730s-40s and 1800s-40s. Let’s pray for refreshing of the saints, revival of the church and an awakening of the nations.
