Welcome to Refinery Life Australia.

This week we start a new study focusing on some of Jesus’ great parables, it is titled The Parables of Jesus Continue to Speak.

Today we are talking about The Parable of the Good Samaritan.

Text

Luke 10:37 AMP

37 He answered, “The one who showed compassion and mercy to him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and constantly do the same.”

Scripture Reading

Luke 10:25-37 AMP

25 And a certain lawyer [an expert in Mosaic Law] stood up to test Him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life?”

26 Jesus said to him, “What is written in the Law? How do you read it?”

27 And he replied, “You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbor as yourself.”

28 Jesus said to him, “You have answered correctly; do this habitually and you will live.”

29 But he, wishing to justify and vindicate himself, asked Jesus, “And who is my neighbor?”

Parable of the Good Samaritan

30 Jesus replied, “A man was going down from Jerusalem to Jericho, and he encountered robbers, who stripped him of his clothes [and belongings], beat him, and went their way [unconcerned], leaving him half dead.

31 Now by coincidence a priest was going down that road, and when he saw him, he passed by on the other side.

32 Likewise a Levite also came down to the place and saw him, and passed by on the other side [of the road].

33 But a Samaritan (foreigner), who was traveling, came upon him; and when he saw him, he was deeply moved with compassion [for him],

34 and went to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them [to sooth and disinfect the injuries]; and he put him on his own pack-animal, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.

35 On the next day he took out two denarii (two days’ wages) and gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I return.’

36 Which of these three do you think proved himself a neighbor to the man who encountered the robbers?”

37 He answered, “The one who showed compassion and mercy to him.” Then Jesus said to him, “Go and constantly do the same.”

Prayer

In Jesus name we pray.

Amen.

Introduction

In this parable Jesus described two types of religion, or two different degrees of religion.

  1. Religion based on the law but with no real commitment.
  1. This type of religion has no eternal value.

The lawyer, as presented in Luke 10:25, indicated that he was concerned with the law in the Jewish sense but not in the secular sense.

He had a knowledge of the law of Moses and the prophets.

This can be illustrated by a person who has a knowledge of the content of the Scriptures but does not show any evidence of the Christian experience of transformation and does not show Christian love.

The lawyer’s question did not spring from a sincere desire to gain insight, instead, the question was intended to trap Jesus.

The lawyer had no heart in his religion.

He believed he had only to keep the law to be saved.

Jesus’ answer in Luke 10:27 is a summary of the ten commandments.

The first section refers to a person’s relation to God and the last refers to a person’s relation to others.

B. This typ of religion has many obvious errors.

It seeks excuses for prejudice (Luke 10:29).

It fails to meet the needs of humankind (verses 31-32).

It brings misery to the one who holds such religion.

It does not meet God’s approval.

2. Religion based on commitment to God that lends to quality to life.

  1. This type of religion is in sharp contrast to the first.

The priest and Levite were professional religionists.

The priest was one who offered sacrifices, and the Levite cleansed various things.

The Samaritan, however, was a hated person.

In Luke 10:37 the lawyer would not so much as say the word Samaritan.

B. This type of religion is demonstrated in compassionate concern.

Religion based on commitment to God overcomes prejudice.

Each person regardless of ethnic background, is precious in God’s sight.

This kind of religion motivates personal sacrifice for others, Luke 10:34 says, and went to him and bandaged up his wounds, pouring oil and wine on them [to sooth and disinfect the injuries]; and he put him on his own pack-animal, and brought him to an inn and took care of him.

This kind of religion follows through on meeting needs, Luke 10:35, On the next day he took out two denarii (two days’ wages) and gave them to the innkeeper, and said, ‘Take care of him; and whatever more you spend, I will repay you when I return.’

The Samaritan told the innkeeper, “I will repay you.”

Conclusion.

The heart of the parable of the good samaritan is “Go, and do likewise.”

The lawyer asked how to inherit eternal life, and Jesus answered him, “Become like me.”

Love everyone.

Do your best to meet the needs of others.

Until next time

Stay in the Blessings
