Text

Ephesians 2:10 AMP

10 For we are His workmanship [His own master work, a work of art], created in Christ Jesus [reborn from above—spiritually transformed, renewed, ready to be used] for good works, which God prepared [for us] beforehand [taking paths which He set], so that we would walk in them [living the good life which He prearranged and made ready for us].

Scripture Reading

Ephesians 2:1-10 AMP

Made Alive in Christ

1 And you [He made alive when you] were [spiritually] dead and separated from Him because of your transgressions and sins,

2 in which you once walked. You were following the ways of this world [influenced by this present age], in accordance with the prince of the power of the air (Satan), the spirit who is now at work in the disobedient [the unbelieving, who fight against the purposes of God].

3 Among these [unbelievers] we all once lived in the passions of our flesh [our behavior governed by the sinful self], indulging the desires of human nature [without the Holy Spirit] and [the impulses] of the [sinful] mind. We were, by nature, children [under the sentence] of [God’s] wrath, just like the rest [of mankind].

4 But God, being [so very] rich in mercy, because of His great and wonderful love with which He loved us,

5 even when we were [spiritually] dead and separated from Him because of our sins, He made us [spiritually] alive together with Christ (for by His grace—His undeserved favor and mercy—you have been saved from God’s judgment).

6 And He raised us up together with Him [when we believed], and seated us with Him in the heavenly places, [because we are] in Christ Jesus,

7 [and He did this] so that in the ages to come He might [clearly] show the immeasurable and unsurpassed riches of His grace in [His] kindness toward us in Christ Jesus [by providing for our redemption].

8 For it is by grace [God’s remarkable compassion and favor drawing you to Christ] that you have been saved [actually delivered from judgment and given eternal life] through faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [not through your own effort], but it is the [undeserved, gracious] gift of God;

9 not as a result of [your] works [nor your attempts to keep the Law], so that no one will [be able to] boast or take credit in any way [for his salvation].

Introduction

Once a man visited another man who worked with wood.

The wood worker had and imaginative mind and skilful hands, and made attractive products.

As the visitor watched the wood worker take a piece of wood and make a beautiful products, he remarked, “God is like that!”

God takes a human being and makes a beautiful life.

God is the master designer.

In fact, Paul said, “We are His workmanship.”

Each believer is God’s work of grace.

Let’s examine the various aspects of God’s work with human beings.

  1. God has an impossible product with which to work.

Paul painted a pathetic picture of human beings.

Such is the world today without God.

Sin has caused terrible circumstances.

It seems as if God has an impossible piece of material to work with.

  1. The person without Christ is dead.

Ephesians 2:1-2 AMP

1 And you [He made alive when you] were [spiritually] dead and separated from Him because of your transgressions and sins,

2 in which you once walked. You were following the ways of this world [influenced by this present age], in accordance with the prince of the power of the air (Satan), the spirit who is now at work in the disobedient [the unbelieving, who fight against the purposes of God].

The words transgressions and sins suggest a disobedience to God and a refusal to obey His laws.

Such actions and attitudes sever the soul from fellowship with God and destroy spiritual life.

The state of a person without Christ is spiritual death, a resistance to the source of life Himself.

B. A person without Christ is dominated.

Ephesians 2:2-3 AMP

2 in which you once walked. You were following the ways of this world [influenced by this present age], in accordance with the prince of the power of the air (Satan), the spirit who is now at work in the disobedient [the unbelieving, who fight against the purposes of God].

3 Among these [unbelievers] we all once lived in the passions of our flesh [our behavior governed by the sinful self], indulging the desires of human nature [without the Holy Spirit] and [the impulses] of the [sinful] mind. We were, by nature, children [under the sentence] of [God’s] wrath, just like the rest [of mankind].

The non believer is described by Paul as being directed and dominated by the world, the flesh, and the devil.

These words summarise the malevolent influences that control those who attempt to live without God.

Looking at the present state of human beings could cause us to be pessimistic and to conclude that people are helpless.

God, however, can take an unholy person and make a beautiful product.

He is the Master Designer.

2. God has an incredible power with which to design.

Paul described God’s incredible ability to change human beings.

God is merciful to humanity, and He desires to help.

  1. The mercy of God prompts the power of God.

The Lord has within His power the capacity to save or to destroy.

His compassion motivates Him to help humans.

Ephesians 2:4 AMP

4 But God, being [so very] rich in mercy, because of His great and wonderful love with which He loved us.

Out of God’s character comes abundant mercy.

It is God’s disposition to help rebellious humans.

B. The power of god changes human beings.

The experience of believers is pictured in terms of the resurrection and exaltation of Christ.

He was dead.

So we were once dead.

We were held under the power of the world, the flesh, and the devil.

Christ was raised from the dead.

So Christ grants believers a new kind of life.

The spiritual experience is just as real as Christ’s death and resurrection.

It is demonstrated by changed lives as true as those of the empty tomb and appearances of the risen Lord.

The new life is not the perfect life.

We are continually being transformed into the image of Christ.

3. God has a purpose to accomplish.

After God works on the impossible product with His incredible power, He has a purpose for the finished product.

  1. God wants to show believers as exhibitions of grace.

Ephesians 2:7 AMP

7 [and He did this] so that in the ages to come He might [clearly] show the immeasurable and unsurpassed riches of His grace in [His] kindness toward us in Christ Jesus [by providing for our redemption].

All designer want to show their products.

God’s product can be seen in a changed life.

Believers are trophies of God’s grace.

It is His desire that His children will exhibit His grace forever.

B. God wants His believers to do good works.

Ephesians 2:8-10 AMP

8 For it is by grace [God’s remarkable compassion and favor drawing you to Christ] that you have been saved [actually delivered from judgment and given eternal life] through faith. And this [salvation] is not of yourselves [not through your own effort], but it is the [undeserved, gracious] gift of God;

9 not as a result of [your] works [nor your attempts to keep the Law], so that no one will [be able to] boast or take credit in any way [for his salvation].

Good works follow a true relationship with the Lord.

When we place our faith in Christ, good works are the inevitable result.

Conclusion.

If you want to see some of God’s great works, look at those around you.

You can see what fellow believers have been and what the are now.

Only God could do a work like that.

He is the Master Designer.

Until next time
