Welcome to Refinery Life Australia.

Today we are continuing our study the “Gifts of The Holy Spirit.”

It is important to remember that a positive response on our part as believers to the Father’s gift of the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential if we are to truly be God’s people.

Today we are discussing The Gift of Wisdom.

Text
1 Corinthians 12:8 (ESV)

8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,

Scripture Reading
Proverbs 4:1-7 (ESV)

A Father’s Wise Instruction

4 Hear, O sons, a father’s instruction, and be attentive, that you may gain insight,

2 for I give you good precepts; do not forsake my teaching.

3 When I was a son with my father, tender, the only one in the sight of my mother,

4 he taught me and said to me, “Let your heart hold fast my words; keep my commandments, and live.

5 Get wisdom; get insight; do not forget, and do not turn away from the words of my mouth.

6 Do not forsake her, and she will keep you; love her, and she will guard you.

7 The beginning of wisdom is this: Get wisdom, and whatever you get, get insight.

Introduction

Why is it that somebody who is obviously much less intelligent is able to do more than someone who is more intelligent?

The subject of todays message, the gift of wisdom, is the answer.

This wisdom comes from the Holy Spirit.

What is the meaning of wisdom?

It is to be understood in relation to knowledge.
Knowledge is information, and wisdom is the right use of that information.

Knowledge has no use unless it is applied.

Wisdom is the application of knowledge.

B. Wisdom is to be understood in relation to some basic concepts.

Wisdom never creates confusion, envy, or trouble but always creates harmony and peace.

Wisdom, as a gift of the Spirit, is to create unity in the church.

2. Wisdom is always used in a cheerful way.

Paul said in Galatians 5:22 that joy is a fruit of the Spirit.

A gloomy attitude is not in keeping with the gift of wisdom.

3. Wisdom denotes quality and not activity.

Anyone can be active, whether he or she is indwell by the holy Spirit or not.

Only a gift of the Spirit is a source of wisdom that results in quality.

4. Wisdom shapes character.

It epitomises a pious manner and finds expression in the knowledge of the word.

5. Wisdom consists of the thoughts of God embodied in Christ.

These characteristics are for enlightenment of the soul.

This is the business of believers who have the gift of wisdom.

C. Wisdom as a gift of the Spirit is different from that of the flesh.

Humans possess a wisdom apart from the gift of the spirit.

But true spiritual wisdom is from God.

Several passages of Scripture confirm this fact.

1 Corinthians 1:20 (ESV)
20 Where is the one who is wise? Where is the scribe? Where is the debater of this age? Has not God made foolish the wisdom of the world?

1 Corinthians 2:5-6 (ESV)
5 so that your faith might not rest in the wisdom of men but in the power of God.

Wisdom from the Spirit

6 Yet among the mature we do impart wisdom, although it is not a wisdom of this age or of the rulers of this age, who are doomed to pass away.

1 Corinthians 3:19 (ESV)
19 For the wisdom of this world is folly with God. For it is written, “He catches the wise in their craftiness,”

2 Corinthians 1:12 (ESV)
Paul’s Change of Plans

12 For our boast is this, the testimony of our conscience, that we behaved in the world with simplicity and godly sincerity, not by earthly wisdom but by the grace of God, and supremely so toward you.

James 3:15 (ESV)
15 This is not the wisdom that comes down from above, but is earthly, unspiritual, demonic.

2. How does the gift of wisdom relate to life?

Acts 6:10 (ESV)

10 But they could not withstand the wisdom and the Spirit with which he was speaking.

Wisdom is given to believers for defence.

Those who follow Jesus are subject to hostility, look at Matthew 10:17-20, Acts 4:1-22, and Acts 6:8-15.

Following Jesus attracts attacks.

When we are confronted we need help making a defence.

This is the use of the gift of wisdom.

B. Wisdom is given to believes for answers to unbelievers.

1 Peter 3:15 (ESV)
15 but in your hearts honour Christ the Lord as holy, always being prepared to make a defence to anyone who asks you for a reason for the hope that is in you; yet do it with gentleness and respect,

One of the greatest challenges Christians face is witnessing to unbelievers.

It is impossible to do this in many situations without the gift of the Holy Spirit.

C. Wisdom is given to believers for problem situations.

James 1:5 (ESV)
5 If any of you lacks wisdom, let him ask God, who gives generously to all without reproach, and it will be given him.

The use of the gift of wisdom dissolves tension in groups.

It clarifies objectives and shortens processes.

D. Wisdom is given to believers for practical conduct.

Ephesians is an excellent Scripture reference for this fact.

The first three chapters are dedicated to doctrine, and the last three to the application of it.

Conclusion

The wisdom we have discussed today in this message is always mediated through the holy Spirit.

He not only enables one to stand for themselves, but also to convey understanding to others as it relates to salvation.

The Holy Spirit gives believers the ability to effectively apply this wisdom to their own lives and to others.

Look at Romans 16:19(ESV)

19 For your obedience is known to all, so that I rejoice over you, but I want you to be wise as to what is good and innocent as to what is evil.

1 Corinthians 3:18 (ESV)
18 Let no one deceive himself. If anyone among you thinks that he is wise in this age, let him become a fool that he may become wise.

Ephesians 5:15-17 (ESV)
15 Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise,

16 making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.

17 Therefore do not be foolish, but understand what the will of the Lord is.

James 3:13 (ESV)
Wisdom from Above

13 Who is wise and understanding among you? By his good conduct let him show his works in the meekness of wisdom.
