Today we are continuing to study the spiritual gifts.

It is important to remember that a positive response on our part as believers to the Father’s gift of the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential if we are to truly be God’s people.

Today we are discussing The Gift of Mercy.

Text

Romans 12:8 (ESV)

8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

Scripture Reading

Matthew 5:1-7 (ESV)

The Sermon on the Mount

5 Seeing the crowds, he went up on the mountain, and when he sat down, his disciples came to him.

The Beatitudes

2 And he opened his mouth and taught them, saying:

3 “Blessed are the poor in spirit, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven.

4 “Blessed are those who mourn, for they shall be comforted.

5 “Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth.

6 “Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

7 “Blessed are the merciful, for they shall receive mercy.

Introduction

The use of this gift is one of the most beautiful services a Christian can perform.

It can be used to give hope, encouragement, and determination.

Jesus is our best example of one who practices mercy.

  1. What are some characteristics of mercy.
  1. It is a quality attributed to God

Joel 2:13 (ESV) says

13 and rend your hearts and not your garments. Return to the Lord your God, for he is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and abounding in steadfast love; and he relents over disaster.

Micah also emphasised God’s mercy in Micah 7:18 (ESV) where he talks about God’s Steadfast Love and Compassion

18 Who is a God like you, pardoning iniquity and passing over transgression for the remnant of his inheritance?

He does not retain his anger forever, because he delights in steadfast love.

The trait of God pointed out in these two passages is His benevolent feeling toward humankind.

Notice the phrases “slow to anger,” “pardons sin,” and “forgives the transgression.”

B. It is a quality believers are commanded to have.

Micah 6:8 n (ESV)

8 He has told you, O man, what is good; and what does the Lord require of you but to do justice, and to love kindness, and to walk humbly with your God?

And Luke 6:36 (ESV) says

36 Be merciful, even as your Father is merciful.

As Christians, we each possess the gift of mercy.

We simply need to cultivate our skill using it.

C. It is a gift of the Holy Spirit.

Romans 12:8 (ESV)

8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.

At this point we should remind ourselves of the true purposes of all the gifts of the Spirit.

They are used to honour Jesus, build up the church, complement and supplement one another, and accomplish God’s will in the lives of His children.

They are to be used in accordance with Scripture.

2. What does the gift of mercy include.

  1. It is the ability to be compassionate.

Mercy is cheerful love toward suffering members of the body of Christ.

It means to bear one another’s burdens and alleviate one another’s distress.

Mercy is not allowing others to get what they deserve.

B. These are some of the characteristics of mercy.

  1. Pity or sympathy.

Pity is more than just feeling sorry for someone.

It is a deep down, sustained compassion.

It is kindness but more.

Pity is showing love under the Holy Spirit’s guidance.

It is acting in Christ’s name with the motive of glorifying God.

2. Action.

Jesus was moved with compassion.

He healed the blind, the crippled, and the diseased.

He was not just stirred emotionally by their needs.

Mercy is demonstrated when a person sees a need and acts to meet that need.

It is considerably more than words.

3. Cheerfulness.

Mercy radiates sunshine.

It is the opposite of doing a service grudgingly.

4. Strengthening.

Christians, in using this gift, are always giving strength to others and imparting hope.

The use of this gift never damages or destroys.

5. Hope.

Hope is an important ingredient of life.

Without it there is little, if anything, left in life.

As Christians show mercy, they put a spark in those that are downcast.

3. The use of the gift of mercy applies to all areas of life.

  1. It applies to the physical.

Institutions like hospitals and orphanages are ministries of mercy, and Christians who meet the physical needs of others demonstrate the gift of mercy.

B. It applies to the social.

A basic human need is to know someone who cares.

Using the gift of mercy means showing love to others.

Loneliness is terrible, but mercy can help heal those who have emotional scars.

C. It applies to the spiritual.

Soul winning and evangelism use the gift of mercy, or at least they should.

Church enlargement and outreach are other ways of using the gift of mercy.

Conclusion

People throughout the world are hurting.

Their hearts ache and their bodies are diseased.

Their stomachs are empty and their souls are thirsty.

Those of you who believe in Jesus Christ have the gift of mercy.

Use it!

Until next time
