Welcome to Refinery Life Australia.

Today we are continuing our study the “Gifts of The Holy Spirit.”

It is important to remember that a positive response on our part as believers to the Father’s gift of the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential if we are to truly be God’s people.

Today we are discussing The Gift of Knowledge.

1 Corinthians 12:8 (ESV)

8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,

Spiritual Gifts

12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.

2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led.

3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;

5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;

6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.

7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

8 For to one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit,

The gift of knowledge, which we are looking at today, is needed by everyone.

Each Christian has the gift to some degree.

What is the gift of knowledge?

It is the ability assimilate facts.

A person’s whole self is involved, not his or her mind.

Knowledge is one experience or a series of experiences.

It may include emotions like grief and sadness, or joy and happiness.

B. It is the ability to differentiate facts.

People who have the gift can take one fact or statement and distinguish it from others.

This is especially true in the area of doctrine.

Spiritual knowledge is needed to distinguish doctrines such as sovereignty and mercy.

C. It is the ability to disseminate facts.

Here the gift is closely related to the gift of wisdom.

Those who have the gift of knowledge know how to spread the good news of Jesus.

2. The gift of knowledge is in reference to believer’s relation to God.

The Holy Spirit dwells only in believers, therefore only Christians have this gift..

People other than Christians have knowledge, but they cannot have spiritual knowledge apart from the Holy Spirit giving it to them.

B. The Holy Spirit gives the gift through human communication.

This is the ability to appraise and judge things as they are.

People who have the gift are able to distinguish between imagination, emotional disturbance, or subjective feelings.

They are able to clarify a passage of scripture as it relates to Bible truths.

Knowledge differentiates the spiritual and legalistic.

C. The Holy Spirit gives the gift to distinguish between true and false.

Christians who have the gift are able to know the difference between genuine and false piety and between godliness and self righteousness.

The gift has a special application in the areas of Christian maturity and evangelism.

3. Some dangers arise when using the word “gift” as it relates the the gift of knowledge.

Some people think that because this gift is a gift, it is instantaneous.

The gift of knowledge is more the ability to get knowledge than the instantaneous possession of it.

B. Believers get knowledge by the gift of the Spirit in various ways.

Knowledge is attained by listening.

The psalmist said, “be still and know that I am God” in Psalm 46:10

God has a lot to say to those who will listen.

2. Knowledge is attained by studying.

Paul said in 2 Timothy 2:15 (ESV)

15 Do your best to present yourself to God as one approved, a worker who has no need to be ashamed, rightly handling the word of truth.

3. Knowledge is attained by applying.

Peter said in 2 Peter 1:5 (ESV)

5 For this very reason, make every effort to supplement your faith with virtue, and virtue with knowledge,

We are cautioned against assuming that we know everything.

We should make sure we are the right kind of students under the right kind of teacher.

Remember the Holy Spirit gives the gift of knowledge not man.

Until next time
