Back to series

Today we are continuing our study of the spiritual gifts, the theme of this series is “Gifts of The Holy Spirit.”

It is important to remember that a positive response on our part as believers to the Father’s gift of the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential if we are to truly be God’s people.

Today we are discussing The Gift of Healing.

1 Corinthians 12:9 (ESV)

9 to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit,

Scripture Reading

James 5:14-16 (ESV)

14 Is anyone among you sick? Let him call for the elders of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord.

15 And the prayer of faith will save the one who is sick, and the Lord will raise him up. And if he has committed sins, he will be forgiven.

16 Therefore, confess your sins to one another and pray for one another, that you may be healed. The prayer of a righteous person has great power as it is working.

A human being is made up of body, soul, and spirit, or physical, mental/emotional, and spiritual parts.

The Lord is interested in all three.

To be whole, a person needs health in all three areas.

The Bible says in 1 John 1:9 (ESV)

9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

This is spiritual healing.

But the main point of this message is healing of the mind and body.

The gift of healing is the ability to intervene in a supernatural way and cure a person of illness and restore health.

  1. What is the general biblical view of the gift of healing
  1. Let’s look at some new testament facts.

The ministry of Christ was one of healing as well as teaching, have a read of Mark 1:14-15 and Mark 1:32-34.

When Jesus sent out the twelve and the seventy, He commissioned them to preach and heal in Luke 9:1-2 and Luke 10:9.

The book of Acts has numerous accounts of the gift of healing, Acts 3:3, 5:12-16, 8:5-8, 19:11-12. And our text for todays message speaks of this ability to heal as a gift of the Spirit.

B. Consider the nature of healing.

The words in the original text are a double plural, “Gifts of Healings”, this obviously refers to many forms of healing, including healings of physical illnesses, spiritual illnesses, and all forms of mental illness as well as things like nervousness, and anxiety.

These gifts of healing are identified with faith.

The recipient must have faith, both in God and in human agents

And the healer is to be a person of faith and have the ability to inspire others.

Matthew 17:19-20 (ESV)

19 Then the disciples came to Jesus privately and said, “Why could we not cast it out?”

20 He said to them, “Because of your little faith. For truly, I say to you, if you have faith like a grain of mustard seed, you will say to this mountain, ‘Move from here to there,’ and it will move, and nothing will be impossible for you.”

C. The gift of healing and the church.

History reveals that the gifts of healing were practised in the early days of Christianity.

It also reveals that the free exercise of these gifts has slowly decreased.

Numerous reasons can be given for this decrease, but one is because of lack of faith.

History further shows us that some personalities and groups have always held to this gift while others have prostituted the gift for financial gain.

2. A closer study of James 5:14-16 helps us to understand the gift of healing.

  1. The initiative is taken by the sick.

Notice who is called, the spiritual leader of the flock.

It is the responsibility of the sick to notify the pastor, this guards against any kind of public display.

B. The pastor or spiritual leader does two things, prays and anoints the sick persons head with oil.

The application of oil is a symbol; of the Holy Spirit, but the pouring of oil can also refer to the use of medication.

In modern terms, this would be equivalent to calling the pastor for prayer and the doctor for medical treatment.

Often both are necessary.

Prayer is the main thrust of the Gift, because it invites God to work on behalf of the ill person.

C. Spiritual healing takes priority over physical healing.

The spiritual and physical are often intertwined.

Spiritual illness can cause mental and physical illness, and at times, spiritual healing can bring about mental and physical healing.

Healing is always for the glory of God.

3. Our attitude toward healing is of vital importance.

  1. We need to avoid some negatives.

To have a good positive and spiritual attitude about our relationship to God, we must realise that not all people are healed.

The Bible records instances in which God did not heal even when prayers were spoken.

Lets look at 2 Corinthians 12:7-9 (ESV)

7 So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.

8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me.

9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me.

B. There are some positives we need to cultivate.

Christians have been entrusted with a ministry of healing that is in accord with present day science.

One of the greatest needs is for the healing power of God to touch those who are oppressed by the burdens and problems of this life.

This healing can be effected by prayer, preaching, use of scientific knowledge, and the listening ear.

The gift of healing is invaluable.

It may be for one person at a time and for another person at another time.

There may be times when a person has this gift and other times when the same person does not.

It is the Christians responsibility to be available for the Holy Spirit’s use. And bestowal of the gift.

Until next time
