We are continuing our study of the spiritual gifts today.
It is important to remember that a positive response on our part as believers to the Father’s gift of the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential if we are to truly be God’s people.
Today we are discussing The Gift of Giving.
Romans 12:8 (ESV)
8 the one who exhorts, in his exhortation; the one who contributes, in generosity; the one who leads, with zeal; the one who does acts of mercy, with cheerfulness.
2 Corinthians 8:1-15 (ESV)
Giving falls into the category of helpfulness rather than being a personal trait so it is a little different to the previous gifts we have discussed.
Excitement builds as we continue to study the Spiritual Gifts.
We can easily see God’s wisdom through His work in the church.
By bestowing the gifts of the Spirit, God equips everyone who is needed to do His work in the church.
- Two words in Romans 12:8 clarify the gift.
- The first word is “contributing.”
It means to give or share of one’s own accord.
Giving can apply to all facets of life.
Some examples are time, talents, and money.
However, it appears that the main use of the gift applies to material things.
It is the ability and desire to use the temporal possessions that God has given us for His glory.
The concept of the gift of contributing stresses the ability and desire to give for the good of others and for the glory of God.
B. The other word is “generously.”
The word literally means without fold or crease, that is, wide open.
It means to be liberal, not selfish or tightfisted.
The gift is to be used sincerely or with delight and without ulterior motives.
It is free from inner discord and accompanied by a pure heart.
2. General thoughts that apply to material things add to the understanding of this gift.
- The minimal amount for a believer to give is the tithe.
At least two shocking statements relate to tithing.
First, it is only the beginning.
The Spirit will not limit us to a level of giving below the tithe.
second, the Spirit never contradicts Scripture, which teaches that tithing is the basic proportion for giving.
Also, there are two motives seen in the tithing concept.
One is legalistic escape.
Some people arguer against tithing to cover up covetousness.
The other is thinking that tithing is enough.
That is not all the Lord requires.
B. Realising the ability to give is from the Spirit establishes the proper attitude towards giving.
Money can be a touchy subject.
It doesn’t matter if you have plenty or none.
It has been said that the most sensitive nerve in the human body is the one that goes to the wallet.
Paul, in 2 Corinthians 8:1-15, gave advice for the use of money.
He cited the example of others in verses 2 to 8, the example of Jesus in verse 9, the past record in verses 10 and 11, the necessity of putting a fine feeling into fine action in verses 12 and 13, and the fact that life has a strange way of evening things up in verses 14 and 15.
C. Matthew 6:21 (ESV)
21 For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also.
Christians have the Holy Spirit dwelling within them.
As they allow the Spirit to control their lives, they demonstrate the gift of giving.
The exercise of the gift of giving exemplifies a real Christian spirit.
Let me encourage you right now to give yourself to the Lord Jesus.
Make Him Lord of your life.
Then seek His leadership in giving.
Until next time
