Hey everyone I’m Pastor Gary Hoban and welcome to Refinery Life Australia.

Our goal is to release a new video / Podcast every Monday, Wednesday and Friday.

As we move through February we are studying the spiritual gifts, the theme is “Gifts of The Holy Spirit.”

It is important to remember that a positive response on our part asa believers to the Father’s gift of the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential if we are to truly be God’s people.

Today we are discussing The Filling of the Holy Spirit.

Text

Ephesians 5:18 (ESV)

18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,

Scripture Reading

Ephesians 5:18-21 (ESV)

18 And do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery, but be filled with the Spirit,

19 addressing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody to the Lord with your heart,

20 giving thanks always and for everything to God the Father in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ,

21 submitting to one another out of reverence for Christ.

Introduction

Not everyone agrees on what is meant by the “filling of the Holy Spirit.”

This message today is not meant to be controversial.

If you pick up an offence, that is your choice, you have a choice to be offended or not.

It is hoped that today an agreement can be reached on the use of terms and that all will benefit from the discussion.

  1. First, consider the character of being filled.

What is the meaning of being filled?

  1. To be filled by the spirit is to be controlled by Him.

In Ephesians 5:18 Paul spoke of not being drunk with wine.

When a person is drunk, he or she is under the control of alcohol.

Then the contrast is made, “Be filled with 9 controlled by) the Spirit.”

B. We are commanded to be controlled in Ephesians 5:18.

Believers are automatically indwell by the Spirit but not controlled.

They are commanded to be controlled by yielding to the Holy Spirit.

If they don’t do so, they are disobedient and sinful.

The verb translated “be filled” is ongoing action.

Thus being filled with the spirit is a continual process.

2. Second, consider the conditions of being filled.

  1. Two general concepts are associated with being filled, Desire (Matthew 5:6 and Obedience.

The Holy Spirit will not violate a believers will, nor will a believer be used in a way contrary to God’s will.

B. Obedience is the key to being spirit filled.

  1. Dedication is the foundation to a spirit filled life.

Christians are exhorted not to quench the Spirit in 1 Thessalonians 5:19 (ESV) it clearly says,

19 Do not quench the Spirit.,

and dedication is the opposite of quenching.

It involves the initial commitment found in Romans 12:1-2 (ESV)

A Living Sacrifice

12 I appeal to you therefore, brothers, by the mercies of God, to present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and acceptable to God, which is your spiritual worship.

2 Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewal of your mind, that by testing you may discern what is the will of God, what is good and acceptable and perfect.

Presentation of the whole self, separation from the world, and transformation of the mind.

2. Direction is a continual part of being filled.

Every Christian who desires to be controlled by the spirit needs and must be willing to be directed by Him in any of the variety of ways He chooses.

The Lord recognises sin in His children’s lives and has made provision for it.

He wants all of His children to respond to Him favourably and be cleansed and victorious.

3. Dependence is vital to being spirit filled.

Christians have high standards that cannot be obtained by human strength.

Only when believers walk with God in total dependence can they be spirit filled.

Physical walking is an illustration.

When we lift one foot to take a step, we depend on the other foot to hold us up.

3. Third, consider the consequence of being spirit filled.

  1. It results in Christlike character (Galations 5:22-23)

Love has as it’s object the glory of God.

Joy is seeing other Christians advance in their knowledge of truth.

Peace is tranquility that comes from right relationship with God.

Long-suffering is the quality of never desiring revenge.

Gentleness is beneficial thoughts.

Goodness is kindness in action.

Faithfulness is using all opportunities of service.

Meekness is humility and servitude.

Self control is discipline.

B. It results in worship and praise (Ephesians 5:18-20)

Worship is the outward expression of praise and the inner expression of songs in the heart.

It is having a thankful heart.

C. It results in submissiveness.

When we are Spirit filled, we will put the needs of others ahead of our own.

D. It results in service. (John 7:37-39)

The Lord only bestows gifts for usefulness.

Christians do not receive from the Lord something they do not use.

Conclusion

One of the most vital needs of the world today is for God’s servants to be controlled by the Holy Spirit.

This will make for a dynamic church, useful Christians, and God’s glory.

I hope each of you will meet all the conditions and from now on live a life under His control.

Until next time
