Back to series

Welcome to another of our Friday messages, Experiencing the Great Salvation of God” this series will enlarge or concepts of what God has provided for us in and through Jesus.

He came to do something more than just give us a ticket to heaven.

This week we are talking about.

Salvation from the Power and Practice of Sin.

Text

Romans 6:12 (ESV)

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.

Scripture Reading

Romans 6:1-14 (ESV)

Introduction

The poor performance of professed disciples is the greatest stumbling block in the path of unbelievers becoming followers of Christ.

And a genuine fear of spiritual failure keeps many sincere seekers from making a commitment to Christ in faith.

A believer who is experiencing victory over the power of sin is the best possible testimony to the saving power of Jesus Christ.

Jesus wants to save us from the penalty of sin, which is death that separates us from God.

To save us from this penalty, He needs our consent to let Him come and live within our hearts.

Revelation 3:20 (ESV) says,

20 Behold, I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and eat with him, and he with me.

Christ also wants to save us from the power of sin in the present.

For Him to accomplish this, we must give Him our cooperation in addition to our consent.

For you to experience salvation from the power and practice of sin in the present, Jesus Christ needs your faith, your commitment, and your cooperation.

  1. To be saved from the power and practice of sin, proclaim your faith in the believers baptism.

A. In the days of the New Testament, faith in Jesus Christ was manifested by a believer submitting to the believers baptism.

In those days there were no alter calls or cards to sign.

B. The believers baptism was by immersion.

The Jews had used baptism as a ceremony by which to convert from paganism to Judaism which manifested death to the old way of life and a new birth to a life of faith and commitment.

Baptism is a powerful symbolic way for a person to proclaim a new relationship with God.

2. To be saved from the power of sin, you must respond to the implications of baptism.

  1. Baptism, properly understood, involves death to a sinful way of life.

Believers who receive baptism are proclaiming a desire to be dead from their former way of life.

In the future, those people respond to sinful stimuli as a dead person responds when spoken to.

B. Baptism, properly understood, involves burial of the old way of life.

Believers can be strengthened in the struggle against evil by remembering their death and burial to a sinful way of life.

C. Baptism, properly understood, involves resurrection to a new way of life.

When believers are baptised, they declare a desire to be alert and responsive to the holy Spirits guidance.

3. The negative and positive obligations of a believers baptism.

Romans 6:11 (ESV)

11 So you also must consider yourselves dead to sin and alive to God in Christ Jesus.

  1. The negative.

Romans 6:12-13 (ESV)

12 Let not sin therefore reign in your mortal body, to make you obey its passions.

13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.

1.Do not let sin reign in your mind.

2. Do not let sin capture your eyes.

3. Do not let sin rule your hearing.

4. Do not let sin dictate your speech.

5. Do not let sin dominate your sexuality.

6. Do not let sin control your hands.

7. Do not let sin direct your feet.

B. The positive.

Romans 6:13 (ESV)

13 Do not present your members to sin as instruments for unrighteousness, but present yourselves to God as those who have been brought from death to life, and your members to God as instruments for righteousness.

  1. God does His work through people.

2. When God wants a word spoken, He uses someone to speak it.

3. When God wants something done, He uses someone to do it.

4. When God wants to encourage someone, He uses another person to communicate it.

5. God is looking for people through who He can do His work in the world today.

Conclusion.

It is not God’s will for sin to have dominion over us.

We are not to be slaves of evil but are to be free by the liberating power of Jesus Christ.

Christ will save you from the past if you will give Him your consent in faith.

He will save you from the power of sin in the present if you will give Him your continuous cooperation.

Christ will save you ultimately from the very presence of sin if you will trust Him and receive Him into your heart today.

Until next time
