Welcome to Refinery Life Australia.

To begin the new year we are kicking off with messages that are evangelistic in both object and nature.

“The Answer to Eternity’s Most Important Questions” is the theme for this series.

Today we are talking about How Can We Know God.

Text

Matthew 11:27 (AMP)

27 All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one fully knows and accurately understands the Son except the Father; and no one fully knows and accurately understands the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son [deliberately] wills to reveal Him.

Scripture Reading

Matthew 11:25-30, Colossians 1:13-20 (AMP)

Prayer

Father, we begin now to anticipate the gift of Your Son.

To remind us that He is Your gift to us and not our gift to ourselves, Jesus Christ, born of a virgin, reveals who You really are and what You really want from us.

Our gifts are but a sign that all our life is given freely to You.

Remind us that the greatest gift is Your Son, and every gift we give is a way of remembering and being thankful.

In Jesus name we pray.

Amen.

Introduction

The majority of Australians believe in God, perhaps not as many as once did but we are still a Christian nation.

Many believe that Jesus Christ is the divine Son of God.

This raises the question as to how we know there is a God.

  1. We can know God by the mystery and majesty of creation.

Matthew 11:25 (AMP)

Come to Me

25 At that time Jesus said, “I praise You, Father, Lord of heaven and earth [I openly and joyfully acknowledge Your great wisdom], that You have hidden these things [these spiritual truths] from the wise and intelligent and revealed them to infants [to new believers, to those seeking God’s will and purpose].

The mystery of the creative power is hidden from us.

We cannot know the Creator or the meaning of His creation unless He reveals Himself to us.

We come to the majesty of creation with humility because we are faced with a reality of such scope and power that we know almost instinctively that its source is beyond human imagination or accidental happening.

This way of knowing God is sometimes referred to as “General Revelation” and is available to everyone.

It is impossible for scientists ever to discover how the universe was formed, but they know it had a beginning.

They might think they can trace things back but all they are doing is creating theories, the theory of evolution is just that a theory, not a law like the law of gravity.

This is nothing more than a bad dream for scientists because they have to make up an answer.

Think about it this way, the scientist is scaling the mountains of ignorance, having his faith in the power of reason, he is about to conquer the highest peak, as he pulls himself of the highest rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there knowing the answer for centuries.

We know that God called this universe into being.

Genesis 1:1-5 (AMP)

The Creation

1 In the beginning God (Elohim) created [by forming from nothing] the heavens and the earth.

2 The earth was formless and void or a waste and emptiness, and darkness was upon the face of the deep [primeval ocean that covered the unformed earth]. The Spirit of God was moving (hovering, brooding) over the face of the waters.

3 And God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

4 God saw that the light was good (pleasing, useful) and He affirmed and sustained it; and God separated the light [distinguishing it] from the darkness.

5 And God called the light day, and the darkness He called night. And there was evening and there was morning, one day.

This is further evidence of the compelling nature of general revelation, which brings people to a shallow faith.

It is not final, nor is it conclusive regarding Jesus, but for many it is a place of beginning.

Jesus calls the Father “Lord of heaven and earth.”

The mystery of creation is hidden from the wise but revealed to little children.

2. We can know God by the mystery and majesty of Christ.

Matthew 11:27 (AMP)

27 All things have been handed over to Me by My Father; and no one fully knows and accurately understands the Son except the Father; and no one fully knows and accurately understands the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son [deliberately] wills to reveal Him.

Many people may be drawn to hope and the beginning of belief by the reality of creation, but redemption, reconciliation, and salvation are in Christ alone.

The world has lost its bearings.

The ideologies being peddled lack direction and lead to know where, well maybe they lead somewhere, hell.

People are going around in circles, they are like chicken little with the sky falling in, when all they need to do is look up and live.

We are repeating history over and over, while there are people trying to rewrite it.

People believe they can find God in a rock, or in the ocean, or a tree.

People are worshipping pastors, or churches, or worship itself.

In this astounding time of scientific openness to the mystery of life and of human despair at the absurdity of life, how can we put a face on God?

Jesus said, “No one fully knows and accurately understands the Father except the Son, and anyone to whom the Son [deliberately] wills to reveal Him.”

The apostle Paul called Jesus Christ, “The image of the invisible God, the first born of all creation, For in Him all the fullness of God was pleased to dwell.

Jesus revealed some very specific truths to us about the nature of the ultimate God.

  1. The birth of Jesus indicates that God was not afraid to enter fully into human life.

Jesus could have just appeared, but He didn’t, He was born.

B. Our Lord Jesus taught us to call the mystery and majesty “Father.”

C. In His life Jesus demonstrated how to live in a basic, trustful relationship with God.

D. In His death Jesus hung between heaven and earth, between God and man.

Crushed beneath our iniquities, Jesus died for us.

E. Through Jesus’ victory over death at the resurrection, He has invited us to the victorious life.

We know that death cannot rip us from the Father’s hand.

F. The promised return of Jesus to the earth reveals that God is not finished with this world or with our lives.

Conclusion.

Jesus Christ is unique, one of a kind, but He is willing to share life with all who will believe.

He has given us eternal life.

Romans 8:29 (AMP)

29 For those whom He foreknew [and loved and chose beforehand], He also predestined to be conformed to the image of His Son [and ultimately share in His complete sanctification], so that He would be the firstborn [the most beloved and honored] among many believers.

The heart of our Lord’s appeal is simply this, that you can know God by trusting Him.

Only in the life of the Son do we have any assurance that we can know God as He really is, God the Father, Lord of heaven and earth, Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, and Father to all who will turn to Him in trusting faith.

Until next time
