Back to series

Welcome to Refinery Life Australia.

Today we are continuing our series based on the book of Exodus, that reveals God’s concern for His people.

The series is titled “The God Who Reveals Himself in Times of Need”

Today we are discussing He Leads Me.

Text

Exodus 13:18 (AMP)

18 But God led the people around by the way of the wilderness toward the [a]Red Sea; the sons of Israel went up in battle array (orderly ranks, marching formation) out of the land of Egypt.

Exodus 13:21 (AMP)

21 The [presence of the] Lord was going before them by day in a pillar (column) of cloud to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, so that they could travel by day and by night.

Scripture Reading

Exodus 13:17-14:21

Introduction

We often think of the deliverance of Israel from the Egyptians as the only theme in the book of Exodus.

To be sure, the exodus motive is strong, but there are other important ideas, for example, the leadership of the Lord.

Exodus records a great account of God’s leadership in verses 13:17 through 14:31.

It relates to the journey of the Israelites from Egypt to the other side of the Red Sea.

To move so many people this distance required leadership.

The author of Exodus attributed this accomplishment to the Lord.

Gos still leads His people today.

Without a doubt, God delivers initially from sin, but He also leads us in our Christian walk.

  1. The Lord leads by His wisdom.
  1. God knows His people.

Exodus 13:17 (AMP)

God Leads the People

17 So it happened, when Pharaoh let the people go, God did not lead them by way of the land of the Philistines, even though it was nearer; for God said, “The people might change their minds when they see war [that is, that there will be war], and return to Egypt.”

God had been intimately acquainted with His people during their bondage.

He heard their groaning and knew their sufferings.

When He set the people free from bondage, He continued to know them.

God knew that people so recently set free from years of bondage were not physically or psychologically ready to fight an enemy.

He knew they might turn back to Egypt.

God knows us.

He knows the exact nature of our lives.

In His great wisdom, He knows what is best for us.

B. God has a better perspective.

The Israelites could only see the traditional, shorter route.

They ignored the danger of the Philistines.

God had a greater perspective.

He could see both the danger and the shorter route.

He knew that the longer route was not the easiest way but the best one only way for Israel to travel.

God has a better perspective on life than we do.

The best route of life may not be the easiest, but God will give us grace for our journey.

2. God leads by His presence.

  1. God goes with His people.

Exodus 13:21 (AMP)

21 The [presence of the] Lord was going before them by day in a pillar (column) of cloud to lead them along the way, and in a pillar of fire by night to give them light, so that they could travel by day and by night.

The cloud and fire suggested the continual presence of the Lord.

God did not leave the Israelites alone to figure out how to move to Sinai, He went with them.

God is with His people.

The Holy Spirit abides in every believer.

With Him we can be led in every life situation.

B. People can be assured by God’s presence.

The presence of the Lord never departed the travelling Israelites.

The Lord was with them by day in a pillar of cloud.

He symbolised His presence with them by night with a pillar of fire.

With the knowledge of God’s presence the people could attempt any venture in their walk.

God’s presence gives comfort as well as guidance.

The child of God does not travel through life by guesswork, but by the guidance of God.

3. God leads by His power.

  1. Human power fails.

The Israelites travelled from Egypt until they came to the Red Sea.

The barrier presented a dilemma.

Behind them they could hear the pursuing Egyptians.

Before them they saw the formidable body of water.

These two barriers caused the Israelites to come to the end of their power.

They could neither defeat the Egyptians nor cross the sea.

Life often brings us to barriers where human strength fails.

These experiences teach us that we are the creatures and that God is our powerful creator.

B. Divine power avails.

Exodus 14:21 (AMP)

21 Then Moses stretched out his hand over the sea; and the Lord swept the sea back by a strong east wind all that night and turned the seabed into dry land, and the waters were divided.

The parting of the sea was a miraculous intervention of God for the Israelites.

God’s power made a way through the sea.

God’s power is available to us.

As we face insurmountable obstacles, we need God’s power.

Only He can help us.

Conclusion.

You need leadership through the journey of life.

No one is capable of leading you but the Lord.

You cannot make the journey yourself.

Allow the Lord to lead you

Until next time
