Gifts of the Spirit

As we move through February we are studying the spiritual gifts, the theme is “Gifts of The Holy Spirit.”

It is important to remember that a positive response on our part as believers to the Father’s gift of the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential if we are to truly be God’s people.

Text

1 Corinthians 12:7 (ESV)

7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

Scripture Reading

1 Corinthians 12:1-7 (ESV)

Spiritual Gifts

12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.

2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led.

3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;

5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;

6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.

7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

Introduction

Today is an introductory message as we begin to discuss the Gifts of the spirit.

Even though the Lord gives each of His children one or more gifts, there are some basic facts that relate to all of them.

Keep these in mind as we look at the spiritual gifts.

  1. All gifts are to honour Jesus.

1 Corinthians 12:3 (ESV)

3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

  1. Jesus is at the centre of all Christendom.

Acts 17:28 (ESV)

28 for “‘In him we live and move and have our being’; as even some of your own poets have said, “‘For we are indeed his offspring.’

All that Christians have and all they do is to honour Jesus.

B. Jesus is the central message of the New Testament.

All the messages and promises in the New Testament point either directly or indirectly to Him.

C. Jesus is to be honoured by all the gifts.

The only purpose of the gifts is to honour Jesus.

If you are prophesying to get a name or casting out demons for an income or any of the other multitude of ways to prostitute the gifts be warned.

Any gift that does not honour Him is not of the spirit.

If a gift of the spirit is not used to honour God, the person using the gift sins against God.

2. All the gifts are to build up the church.

1 Corinthians 12:7 (ESV)

7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

Notice I didn’t say build up yourself, or your wallet, or your “ministry”

All of the gifts are to build up the church, Jesus is coming back for the church, not the world, and ministries must be born from the church.

  1. The church is the body of Christ.

This is made clear in 1 Corinthians 12:7 (ESV)

7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

And 1 Corinthians 12:13 (ESV)

13 For in one Spirit we were all baptised into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and all were made to drink of one Spirit.

B. The church is a divinely established institution.

Matthew 16:18 (ESV)

18 And I tell you, you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it.

The Lord placed the church on His earth for the propagation of the gospel.

The gifts of the Spirit enable the church to accomplish their mission.

3. All gifts are for a common cause.

  1. Each gift is to supplement and complement all the others.

No gift of the Spirit works independently of the others.

Instead, each gift is to function in relation to all others.

B. Each Christian is to use their gifts to supplement and complement other Christian’s gifts.

This cooperation is what enables the Lord’s work to progress.

He endows some of His children with one ability and others with another gift, they are to use these gifts together for the Lord’s work.

The church is to work like a football team, some members are to attack by running the ball and some are to defend by blocking and tackling the opposing team.

It takes both to be a successful team.

4. All gifts are important.

  1. This is a fact that all Christians need to thoroughly fix in their minds.

The gifts of the Holy Spirit are the gifts of a sovereign God.

Anything that anyone does for the Lord is important.

Each person is to take inventory of their abilities, thank God for them, and use them according to God’s plan.

B. This is a fact that will make the world take notice.

The gifts of the Spirit make each individual important.

No one is ignored, and no one is more important than another in God’s sight.

When others see the personal interest God takes in each person, they will be attracted to God.

5. All gifts are according to the Bible.

  1. The Bible is the inspired Word of God.

2 Timothy 3:16 (ESV) tells us

16 All Scripture is breathed out by God and profitable for teaching, for reproof, for correction, and for training in righteousness,

There is no way the Spirit could inspire the writing of the Bible and then contradict Himself in bestowing gifts.

B. The Bible is the recorded revelation of God.

The Holy Spirit uses the Scriptures to inspire and inform.

He also gives the humankind the ability to understand the revelation found in the Bible.

Conclusion

As a Christian, you have one or more gifts of the Holy Spirit.

It is your privilege to discover them and use them for God’s glory.

Until next time
