Welcome to Refinery Life Australia.

One of the greatest tragedies of life is the inability or the neglect of a father to pass on to his children the benefits of his experience.

Fathers must instruct, warn, and encourage their children.

For the next while Wednesday evenings messages will be from John’s first epistle and are titled “The Counsel of a Spiritual Father to His Children.”

Today we are discussing Counterfeit Christianity, Its Antidote

Text

1 John 2:24 (AMP)

24 As for you, let that remain in you [keeping in your hearts that message of salvation] which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you too will remain in the Son and in the Father [forever].

Scripture Reading

1 John 2:24-29 (AMP)

24 As for you, let that remain in you [keeping in your hearts that message of salvation] which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning remains in you, you too will remain in the Son and in the Father [forever].

The Promise Is Eternal Life

25 This is the promise which He Himself promised us—eternal life.

26 These things I have written to you with reference to those who are trying to deceive you [seducing you and leading you away from the truth and sound doctrine].

27 As for you, the anointing [the special gift, the preparation] which you received from Him remains [permanently] in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you. But just as His anointing teaches you [giving you insight through the presence of the Holy Spirit] about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as His anointing has taught you, you must remain in Him [being rooted in Him, knit to Him].

28 Now, little children (believers, dear ones), remain in Him [with unwavering faith], so that when He appears [at His return], we may have [perfect] confidence and not be ashamed and shrink away from Him at His coming.

29 If you know that He is absolutely righteous, you know [for certain] that everyone who practices righteousness [doing what is right and conforming to God’s will] has been born of Him.

Introduction

The temptation to be faithless is the number one problem among Christians, and it always has been.

This is the sinister counterfeit satan has so successfully perpetuated in a variety of ways among believers.

He often uses other people in his determination to weaken a christians faith.

One person he uses is the cynic, who raises doubts in the Christians mind.

This person has the “did God really say?” Approach of the tempter like in Genesis 3:1 (AMP)

The Fall of Man

3 Now the serpent was more crafty (subtle, skilled in deceit) than any living creature of the field which the Lord God had made. And [a]the serpent (Satan) said to the woman, “Can it really be that God has said, ‘You shall not eat from [b]any tree of the garden’?”

Then there is the hypocrite who looks like a Christian and talks like a Christian but who’s conduct is inconsistent.

Satan also uses popular views to distort the truth.

For example, “one religion is just as good as another as long as you are sincere”

Or, “you have to be realistic. The Bible doesn’t always mean what it says.”

Or, “you don’t need to go to church to be a Christian.”

John gave an antidote for the problem of faithlessness.

  1. The first antidote John gave is the abiding of the Word. 1 John 2:24-26.
  1. How does Jesus become real to a new believer?

Through Scripture!

What are some of the first, basic truths we learn?

That Jesus is God’s Son, that He died on a cross for our sins and rose on the third day, and that He promised to return to receive us unto Himself.

Along with these great truths is the amazing realisation that God knows us by name and is always available to hear our prayers and answer them according to His will.

But it doesn’t take long for satan to start whispering doubts to a young Christian.

B. What is the antidote for these attacks from satan?

John simply said to hold fast to that which we learned at the beginning of our walk with God.

Stay in the Word!

John used the word abide, which means to remain in the sense that one is at home, comfortable, and conversant with Bible truths.

We are not merely to taste the Word, we are to ingest it, depending on the Holy Spirit to help us digest it so that it can be absorbed into our lives.

2. The second antidote John gave is the anointing of the Spirit. 1 John 2:27.

  1. John referred to “anointing” as the coming of the Holy Spirit at salvation abide in us.

This anointing, or initiation, is never repeated.

Yet we may grieve the Holy Spirit by disobedience and sin, thus allowing self to usurp the Spirit’s leadership.

B. Because of the anointing of the Holy Spirit we receive salvation, John said 1 John 2:27 (AMP)

27 As for you, the anointing [the special gift, the preparation] which you received from Him remains [permanently] in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you. But just as His anointing teaches you [giving you insight through the presence of the Holy Spirit] about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as His anointing has taught you, [a]you must remain in Him [being rooted in Him, knit to Him].

He meant that we do not constantly need to be taught the elementary truths of the gospel, for that is one of the Holy Spirit’s vital ministries.

Also, the Holy Spirit provides a glorious “check and balance” within us.

He is always present to verify the teachings we do receive from others.

3. The third antidote John gave is the coming of Jesus. 1 John 2:28-29.

  1. John reminded his readers that the next great event on eternities calendar is the second coming of Jesus.

He did not set any date, instead, he was saying, ‘whenever He comes, and it could be at any minute, be found living in such a way that you will not be ashamed to stand before Him!”

B. Actually, Christians should live before God as Enoch did.

The Bible says that Enoch walked with God, and he was not found, for God took him in Genesis 5:24.

Enoch lived in such close and constant communion with God that his transition from earthly existence the heavenly existence was a very simple thing.

This is how we should live.

Conclusion.

What part does God’s Word play in your life?

Does it “abide” within you?

And what about the Holy Spirit?

Does He have complete control in your life?

Do you anticipate Jesus’ coming with joy?

Are you living so close to Him, constantly walking by His side, that His coming will be a welcome transition?

Until next time
