Back to series

As we move through February we are studying the spiritual gifts, the theme is “Gifts of The Holy Spirit.”

It is important to remember that a positive response on our part as believers to the Father’s gift of the Holy Spirit is absolutely essential if we are to truly be God’s people.

Today we are discussing Concerning Spiritual Gifts.

Text

1 Corinthians 12:1 (ESV)

Spiritual Gifts

12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.

Scripture Reading

1 Corinthians 12:1-7 (ESV)

Spiritual Gifts

12 Now concerning spiritual gifts, brothers, I do not want you to be uninformed.

2 You know that when you were pagans you were led astray to mute idols, however you were led.

3 Therefore I want you to understand that no one speaking in the Spirit of God ever says “Jesus is accursed!” and no one can say “Jesus is Lord” except in the Holy Spirit.

4 Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit;

5 and there are varieties of service, but the same Lord;

6 and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who empowers them all in everyone.

7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

Introduction

The Holy Spirit has many wonderful gifts for believers, but many do not recognise them because of spiritual blindness.

The word gifts will be emphasised in this message.

  1. First, consider the subject of, “gifts”
  1. Two words are interpreted gift.

The first is charis, usually interpreted as grace.

The Holy Spirit’s  gifts are of grace, they cannot be brought or earned.

The other is charisma, from where we get our word charismatic.

This word has a wide range of uses, from the gift of salvation in Romans 6:23 to the gift of providential care in 2 Corinthians 1:11.

It is usually used for special abilities given to individuals by God.

Thus a spiritual gift may be defined as a God given ability for service.

B. The gifts are to be distinguished from other words that relate to the Holy Spirit.

  1. The gift of the Spirit and the gifts of the Spirit are seperate.

All believers have the gift of the Spirit, that is, He is in every believer (Acts 2:38)

The gifts, however, are special abilities given according to God’s will to those who are indwell with the Holy Spirit.

2. The gifts are seperate from talents.

Talents are associated with aptitudes and skills.

Gifts are spiritual abilities.

Talents depend on natural power, gifts on spiritual power,

Talents instruct or inspire on a natural level.

The gifts ofd the Holy Spirit empower believers.

3. The gifts are seperate from offices.

A person may have a gift belonging to an office without holding that position.

But a believer may not hold a divinely appointed office without the corresponding gift to perform it.

4. The gifts are seperate from fruit.

Gifts deal with service, but fruit with character.

Gifts are a means to an end, fruit is the end.

Gifts are what a person has, and fruit is what a person is.

Gifts are from without, fruit is from within.

All gifts are not for all believers, but all believers have a gift.

Gifts will cease, but fruit will not cease.

5. The gifts are seperate from goodness.

It is better to be good than gifted.

Love is the theme of the chapter that stands in the middle of a discussion of gifts.

2. Second, consider the purpose of the gifts.

Remember, 1 Corinthians 12:7 (ESV)

7 To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good.

The purpose of the gifts of the Holy Spirit is to bring together, to be helpful or useful.

The church is to be built up by continuous use of the gifts.

Ephesians 4:12 (ESV)

12 to equip the saints for the work of ministry, for building up the body of Christ,

B. The word gifts is plural, there are many.

Paul used the parts of the human body working together as an analogy to illustrate how every spiritual gift is of vital importance.

Every person using the gifts they have been given supplements and compliments the gifts given to fellow believers.

Conclusion

Each child of God has the gift of the Spirit, the Holy Spirit dwells within all believers.

Each child of God also has some spiritual gift to be used for the glory and honour of God.

Ephesians 4:7 (ESV)

7 But grace was given to each one of us according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

Until next time
